Permafrost Mods: What Exists and What's Safe

Updated:

Quick answer: Permafrost has no official mod support — no Steam Workshop, no mod kit, no developer blessing. A small community scene on Nexus Mods has produced a mod loader and a few tweaks. Use anything at your own risk, and never in co-op you don't control.

Official status

The developers have not announced modding support. The game is in Early Access and updates frequently, which means any mod can break with any patch — two hotfixes shipped on launch day alone.

What actually exists (October 2026)

A small Permafrost section on Nexus Mods hosts the early scene:

  • ModLoader API — a community DLL loader with an in-game mod menu; tightly version-locked to specific game builds.
  • PermafrostChat — adds text chat (Enter/Esc) for co-op sessions; host and chatters all need it.
  • Custom Durability — a config multiplier for item durability loss.
  • Survival Tweaks — multipliers for stamina, hunger, energy, damage and warmth loss (single-player tested).

Availability and compatibility change weekly in Early Access — check each mod's page for the supported game build before installing.

Safety rules

  • Single-player first. Mods in someone else's co-op session can cause desync or crashes, and third-party "trainers" in multiplayer are a fast way to ruin someone's save.
  • Back up your save before installing anything that touches game files.
  • Version-lock matters: a loader built for build 0.44.2 will not necessarily survive 0.44.3.
  • Nexus Mods flags files it has not fully vetted — read the posts tab before downloading.

Cheats and trainers

There are no official cheats, console commands or developer trainer. Sites advertising "Permafrost trainers" or "cheat engines" are third-party tools of varying safety, and the worst of them are malware dressed as a download button. If you want an easier run, the built-in Custom world preset (sliders for hunger, damage, stamina and temperature) does the job safely.
