Permafrost Gameplay: What You Actually Do

Updated:

Quick answer: Permafrost is a story-driven open-world survival sandbox. You scavenge frozen ruins, manage warmth/hunger/health, craft up a tool ladder (stone → flint → scrap → iron → quality), build and renovate shelters, follow a questline to find your missing friend — alone or with up to 3 friends.

The core loop

  1. Survive the weather. The cold is the headline enemy: a body-warmth meter, clothing with temperature ratings, blizzards, and extreme "cold zones" guarding the best loot.
  2. Scavenge and hunt. Abandoned towns yield scrap, plastic, cloth and canned food; deer, boar and wolves provide meat and pelts.
  3. Craft and upgrade. Handcrafting covers basics; workbenches, furnaces, stoves and tailoring benches unlock the real tiers via blueprint points.
  4. Build and renovate. Claim a spot, throw up walls, or renovate ruined buildings; restore a network of shelters across the region.
  5. Follow the story. Radio signals, recordings and NPCs at camps pull you toward the mystery of what happened — and toward Icarus.

Story, Survival and Custom modes

  • Story: the intended first experience — full questline, gentler survival pressure.
  • Survival: harsher — scarcer resources (coal notably), meaner conditions.
  • Custom: host-tuned sliders for hunger, damage, stamina, temperature and more.

All modes support solo or 1–4 player online co-op. There is no PvP.

What makes it different

  • Your dog scouts, warns of danger and carries supplies — a companion, not a turret.
  • Exploration-gated progression: better gear comes from restoring shelters and reaching new corners of the map, not from XP bars alone.
  • A grounded apocalypse: no zombies, no fantasy — weather, wildlife, bandits and a cult that worships the shattered moon.

How long to play?

There is no reliable completion-time data for the Early Access build yet — we will not invent hour figures. Expect the current story content to fill a handful of sessions, with co-op and base building extending it. The developers plan at least 12 months of Early Access content additions.
